The MyDKids Literacy Program takes heed to the new Read to Achieve Program that was made law in North Carolina with the Excellent Public Schools Act in July 2012. The goal of the State is to ensure that every student read at or above grade level at the end of third grade and continue to progress in reading proficiency so that he or she can read, comprehend, integrate, and apply complex text when needed for secondary education and career success. If a student is not proficient then they will have a retained label and be required to attend summer school. This means that foundational strengthening efforts must be put in place early especially for second graders as they will enter 3rd grade next which is the determining year. This initiative proposes a thorough plan for continued student reading performance to assure that each struggling student reader demonstrates significant or expected grade level growth in order to begin to eliminate their achievement gap.
The “COOL READS FOR HOT DAYS” initiative is a summer reading program designed to maintain and increase reading levels of elementary school aged children by consistently reading and writing over the summer break. MyDKids currently partners with Spring Valley Elementary in Durham, NC and is looking to expand to counties in eastern North Carolina.
